1) All of the men named served as CS Secretary of
War.
2) Simon Cameron and Edwin M. Stanton served as US
Secretaries of War.
3) Roger B.Taney was Chief Justice of US Supreme
Court during the war
4) Though provided for in CS Constitution, a Supreme
Court was never organized. James Halyburton,(Harvard College grad, '23)
VA Circuit Ct. Justice, swore in Jeff Davis.
5) Grant's first important battle was Belmont.
6) Lee's first important engagement was Rich Mountain, in west Virginia.
7) US Naval Academy moved to Newport, RI, for the war.
8) CS Naval Academy was located on James River, near Richmond, on CS PATRICK
HENRY.from 1863, to 1865.
9) Lee, at Fredericksburg, said "It is well that war
is so terrible, etc."
10) Grant said "Let us have peace." Place uncertain.
11) Gen. George Pickett said "Up Virginians, and to
your posts" at Gettysburg. (Though probably lots of
other VA officers said similar things.)
12) W. T. Sherman said "We shall make Georgia howl!"
probably in a letter, as he proceeded to do so.
13) Gen. Barnard Bee said "There stands Jackson,
etc., at I Manassas.
13) MG John Sedgwick said "A sharpshooter could not
hit etc." at Spottsylvania.
14) Adm.David Farragut, USN, said "Damn the
torpedoes!" at battle of Mobile Bay.
15) Gen. Phil Sheridsan said "A crow flying over
those fields could not find rations." in letter to
Grant about devastation in Shenandoah Valley.
